Celebrating Roland’s First Birthday Cake Smash Session!

It’s always an extra special experience when I get to photograph friends, and Roland’s cake smash was such a meaningful one for me. His parents are good friends of ours, and I’ve had the privilege of documenting his journey from newborn to his big 1st birthday. Watching him grow and capturing these milestones has truly been a joy.

Roland was an absolute delight during his cake smash session! He was full of smiles and curiosity, making every moment fun to capture. I absolutely loved the color palette his mum picked—sage green, beige, and gold. It gave the setup a soft, elegant feel while still being playful and perfect for a little boy celebrating his big day.

For those new to cake smash sessions, here’s a little peek into what makes them so special. We start with family portraits to capture those beautiful moments with the whole family together. Then, I move into classic portraits of the birthday boy or girl—timeless images where their personality shines through. Once we’ve captured those sweet shots, it’s time for the cake! Watching the little ones explore, taste, and smash their cake is always such a fun, candid experience, filled with giggles and surprise. To wrap up the session, we finish with a warm bubble bath. It’s the perfect way to clean off the cake while capturing even more adorable moments.

Having done these sessions for over 12 years now, cake smashes hold a special place in my heart. Each one is unique, from the themes to the joy on the little ones’ faces. Roland’s session, with its beautiful sage green, beige, and gold palette, will always be a favourite of mine.
